In 1980, Mel Gibson and Robyn Moore married one another in a private ceremony and went on to have seven kids. They legally divorced in 2012.
Gibson began seeing Russian singer Oskana Grigorieva with whom he had a baby girl named Lucia in 2009. Still, the two went their separate ways, with the vocalist accusing the Hollywood superstar of domestic abuse.
The actor is now dating a scriptwriter going by Rosalind, with whom he had his ninth child.
Mel Gibson and Robyn Moore were married for almost three decades. Their long-term marriage was revered in Hollywood, where commitments tend not to last too long. However, they eventually went their separate ways.
The two met in the late 1970s in Australia, where Gibson had moved from the United States as a pre-teen. At the time, Moore was a dental nurse, Gisbon was a stage actor, and both were sharing an apartment.
They were both in their mid-20s when they decided it was time to make their way down the aisle. In 1980, away from all the press and publicity, the actor and his soon-to-be wife exchanged vows in Australia in a prompt and private ceremony.
At the time of the wedding, ongoing whispers clashed with Gibson’s reputation as a dedicated member of the Catholic Church. Notwithstanding the rule of abstinence from intercourse before marriage, there was speculation that Moore was with child.
Beyond the wedding, Gibson ensured that privacy remained a consistent theme, keeping his children’s lives away from public scrutiny. True to his Catholic beliefs, the actor has nine children. Out of this litter of children, he shares seven with Moore.
Some of them have worked in the film industry, such as oldest child and daughter Hannah Gibson who was previously a make-up artist. She applied her talents to her own father when working on one of his films, “What Women Want.”
Christian Gibson, one of twins born in the early 1980s, is a camera operator, while Louis Gibson has worked as a scriptwriter and director. One of his notable projects is “Happy Hunting.”
Milo Gibson came into this world in 1990 and followed in his dad’s footsteps as an actor. He has been in films such as “Brother’s Keeper,” and “Hacksaw Ridge.”
Meanwhile, Gibson’s other twin son, Edward Gibson, took a different direction. He is the founder of a company called Natural Edge.
Younger brother William, born in the mid-1980s, remains a mystery, preferring to stay out of the spotlight completely, while Gibsonl’s youngest child, Thomas, is a college graduate, taking home his certificate in 2017.
While Gibson and Moore are no longer together, she played an essential part in the veteran actor’s journey toward sobriety. Her influence led to his eventual decision to join Alcoholics Anonymous.
At one point, Gibson was struggling with the realities of fame and using alcohol as a coping mechanism. His wife stepped in, threatening to leave him if he did not get his act together.
Perhaps, as is evident by the divorce, the two didn’t always experience marital bliss. In 2002, Gibson expressed:
“You’re going to get ups and downs, and you’re going to get days when you really want to strangle each other…It doesn’t matter who the other person is…Every time that happens and you go through a dry spell, and in 22 years that happens a lot.”
At the time, he and his wife had been married for 22 years, with Gibson expressing that people give up on their relationships too quickly. He refuted the idea that finding another individual would solve anyone’s issues.
Calling It Quits after a Lifetime Together
While Moore was influential in getting her now ex-husband onto the straight and narrow, his drinking significantly affected their marriage. His first arrest for driving under the influence occurred in 1984.
In a more well-known controversy, Gibson was arrested for driving under the influence in 2006 while spouting anti-semitic remarks. The two separated soon after, in August of the same year.
In April 2009, Moore officially filed for divorce three years following their separation. This decision was made among revelations that Oksana Grigorieva, a singer from Russia and Gibson’s lover at the time, was pregnant.
The coinciding incidents made many onlookers suspicious about the possible role Gibson and Grigorieva’s relationship played. However, it was said that Gibson and Moore’s split was generally civil.
A joint statement from the then-spouses read: “Throughout our marriage and separation, we have always strived to maintain the privacy and integrity of our family and will continue to do so…”
Gibson had taken responsibility for the eventual split, talking about the divorce when he appeared as a guest on “The Tonight Show With Jay Leno.” He sincerely expressed that the blame for the end of his marriage should be put on him.
In November 2009 in Los Angeles, only months after the divorce filing, Grigorieva gave birth to her and Gibson’s newborn baby girl, who they named Lucia. Lucia became Gibson’s eighth child.
Moore and Gibson were legally divorced in January 2012, with a divorce payout dubbed the biggest one in the history of Hollywood.
Gibson and Grigorieva did not last long, ending their relationship less than half a year into it. In mid-2010, the music artist filed a request for a restraining order after alleging that Gibson had physically abused her. She claimed:
“I thought he would kill me.”
In an official declaration, Gibson claimed that the allegation was misconstrued, stating that he was trying to prevent her from hurting their baby, who she was shaking while they were fighting. The actor also claimed he used an open hand, not a fist.
An investigation into the matter occurred as a result as well as a slew of lawful disputes between the ex-couple. Condemning tapes were also leaked online at the time and showed Gibson exhibiting various toxic behaviors, such as racist language.
On the other hand, Moore vouched for Gibson’s alleged innocence in the matter via a one-page sworn declaration. In this declaration, she stated:
“Mel never engaged in any physical abuse of any kind toward me before, during or after our marriage.”
She also claimed that he never touched any of their children and expressed that her soon-to-be ex-husband was a great father. However, there has been speculation that Gibson’s ex-wife was attempting to ensure security for herself and her children by preventing her ex-husband from possibly losing his career.
Moore and Gibson were legally divorced in January 2012, with a divorce payout dubbed the biggest one in the history of Hollywood. His ex-wife claimed half of everything due to no prenuptial agreement between the two. This payout ran into the hundreds of millions, with Gibson’s fortune once approximated to be around $850 million.

When it comes to film-making, Moore also gets half of what residual income Gibson earns. At the time, some estimates of his assets included real-estate investments over hundreds of millions and “Passion of the Christ” gross profits of over $600 million. As for child custody, they only had one child at 12 years old, who was young enough to consider.
While Moore gained much from her divorce from Gibson, Grigorieva had the opposite experience, filing for bankruptcy in 2014. She was awarded a significant amount of money in a custody battle with Gibson, but it didn’t bode well in the long term.
Her debts, especially from the legal fees, drained her of whatever monetary war she may have won. During the legal clash, she went through 40 lawyers. It was reported during this bankruptcy that she owed 5 lawyers a quarter of a million dollars.
At the time, she opened up about her dire financial straits stating that she was $438,000 in debt while having $48,000 in assets to her name.
A New Chapter with a New Lover
Unlike Grigorieva, when 2014 came around for Gibson, he began dating a screenwriter going by Rosalind Ross, and they are still going strong.
The Emmerson College graduate is just over three decades younger than the veteran actor, which has caused a stir among those who disapprove of the age gap. The director, however, has yet to take this to heart.
The two first crossed paths when Ross became a co-scriptwriter for Gibson’s production house. Ross is not just famous as Gibson’s girlfriend. She is an accomplished woman in her field, having contributed her writing abilities to multiple movies such as “Escaping North Korea,” “Black Sam” and “Matador.”
On January 22, 2017, in Los Angeles, Gibson and Ross welcomed their first child and the Gibson’s ninth into the world. A representative for the couple stated:
They’re thrilled and Lars is adorable. Their family is all around them and Mel is over the moon.”
The rep went on to report that everyone was in good health and that they had gone home. The scriptwriter and “Passion of the Christ” director named their newborn baby Lars Gerard Gibson, who came into the world at 5 lbs. 5 oz.
In July 2020, Gibson, Ross, and their now-three-year-old Lars were spotted grocery shopping together as a family in Malibu. They both donned masks for protection against COVID-19 as they walked hand in hand in the parking lot.
This shopping expedition occurred around the same time Gibson was involved in another controversy. Actress Winona Ryder had come out, purporting that the performer had used anti-semitic remarks against her, although Gibson refuted these accusations.
